In practice, some people asking this question have a photo that's both the wrong shape and too soft at the size they need — a phone photo they want as a desktop wallpaper, for example. How do I know if I need an image extender or an upscaler?
If your photo's subject is cut off or the frame is the wrong shape for your screen or print size, you need an image extender. If the frame is already the right shape but the photo looks soft, pixelated, or low-detail at that size, you need an upscaler. Some real photos need both — extend first to fix the shape, then run a dedicated upscaler afterward if you still need more resolution than the extend delivers.
Can one tool do both jobs?
Not on this site, and we'd rather say that plainly than blur the two. This is an image extender: it fixes the shape problem by adding new background pixels, and every output comes back at a standard, consistent resolution regardless of source. It does not sharpen or add detail to an already-correct-shape photo, and it won't turn a low-resolution source into a native 4K file — that's a dedicated upscaler's job, run as a separate step if you need it.
Is an image extender the same as cropping in reverse?
Functionally, yes — cropping removes pixels to fit a frame, an image extender adds pixels to fit a frame. An upscaler doesn't touch the frame at all; it only changes how much detail is packed into the pixels you already have.
